About The Keoladeo National Park

Started by the Maharaja of Bharatpur as a private shooting reserve, it covers 29 sq km of kadam forests, grasslands and shallow lakes. The name Keoladeo comes from a nearby ancient Hindu temple, devoted to Lord Shiva. Besides bird watching, the places of tourist interest for sight seeing in Keoladeo Ghana bird sanctuary are the Bharatpur government Museum, Lohagarh Fort and Deeg Palace.

Getting There And Getting About

This sanctuary is just two km from Bharatpur town, well connected by train and road to Delhi (176 km) and Agra (50 km) as well as by regular buses plying to Bharatpur from Delhi, Agra, and other cities, and taxis. The park itself is excellent for walking or cycling. These are also the best way of seeing Keoladeo's fabulous range of bird life. Taxis or private vehicles, are allowed into the park. The forest department also operates mini buses and boats. Cycles can be hired at the entrance to Keoladeo; a map of the park's walking trails can be obtained from the reception counter at the entrance.

Guest houses, forest lodges and hotels including heritage hotels populate the Bharatpur town.
