Rajasthan - Jaipur - Jantar Mantar

Jantar Mantar was built by Maharaja Jai Singh II. Constructed between 1727 and 1733, Jantar Mantar is a collection of astrological instruments built in stone. He constructed five such labs, including the ones at Jaipur and Delhi, with the one in Jaipur being the largest. Initially called Yantra Mantra, meaning instruments and formulae, the present name came about through mispronunciation.

Constructing architectural astronomical instruments that give accurate information, as has been confirmed with modern instruments, is a remarkable achievement for the people of that time. The compound instruments, with settings and shapes scientifically designed shows the expertise of Medieval Indian Astronomy. Jantar Mantar is a protected National Monument of India.

The observatory has fourteen statistical instruments to measure time, predict eclipses and calculate other astronomical events. The instruments are all accurate. The Sundial tells the time to an accuracy of about two seconds in local time of Jaipur and attracts the maximum attention of people.

Jantar Mantar was thoroughly restored in 1901. It is among the major tourist attractions of Jaipur.
