Maharana Pratap was the son of Maharana Udai Singh II, and a ruler of Mewar. In the rivalry of the Rajputs with the mighty Mughal empire in the reign of Akbar, Maharana Pratap fought a famous battle. Though the Rajputs were defeated, Maharana Pratap was among the fiercest opponents that the Mughals ever faced. The horse Chetak was Maharana Pratap's constant companion during his battles and is revered equally. They were killed in the famous battle of Haldighati. The monument dedicated to both Maharana Pratap and his loyal companion Chetak is situated atop a hill called Moti Magri (Pearl Hill) on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake. The statue itself is made of bronze, an alloy of copper and zinc. Both Maharana Pratap and Chetak are revered by the residents of Udaipur. The ruins of a very old fort as well as an attractive Japanese garden that is an excellent place for picnicking are close by.
