Rajasthan - Pushkar - Pushkar Fair

Pushkar - The Home of Lord Brahma

Pushkar literally means born due to a flower. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that the gods released a swan with a lotus in its beak and let it fall on earth to decide a place for Brahma to perform a grand yagna. This place is called Pushkar. It is known the world over for the Brahma temple, the only one in the world, and is a Hindu pilgrimage place. People throng Pushkar for a dip in the lake and to visit the temple.

The town has five principle temples and many small temples.

Location And Climate

Located in a beautiful valley, it is just 14 km from Ajmer, another famous destination of Rajasthan. Sand dunes encircle the town on one side and hills of Aravali on the other three. Climate here is extreme, with hot summers (above 40 degrees) and cold winters (below 10 degrees). The town does not get much rain, even during monsoon. Best time to visit is from September to March.

Pushkar Camel Fair

Pushkar is extremely popular among international tourists for its annual cattle fair. During the full moon day of Kartik Purnima that usually falls in October - November, pilgrims throng this holy city for a dip in the lake. At this time, the city also becomes a venue for gigantic cattle fair that is held over the five days of worshipping. The Pushkar Fair witnesses camel trading, folk dances, music, and cultural extravaganzas. Camels, cows and horses are paraded and raced. This is the world's largest camel fair, with at least 25,000 camels traded during this period.

Shopping

There are numerous small and interesting shops. Silver and beaded jewellery, embroidered fabrics, bed linen and cushion covers are the most interesting purchases from Pushkar apart from Rajasthani puppets and fusion music. An excellent range of second hand books in various languages is also available here.

Turbaned heads of the rural men and the colourful finery of their women; the Pushkar Fair is Rajasthan at its colourful best. The faithful believe that all the gods descend on Pushkar during this time.
