Desert is timeless and its beauty is eternal. The shifting sand dunes can keep anybody mesmerised forever. The ethereal splendour of the sand dunes goes up manifold at sunset. To experience so much loveliness, the Sam Sand Dunes and Khurri Village with sand dunes nearby are two of the most popular destinations of Jaisalmer, next only to its well known and unique Golden Fort.

Sam Sand Dunes are 45 km out of Jaisalmer. The sand dunes are best experienced through a camel safari. No experience can ever come close to a night out on the sands under a blue starlit sky. The camels and their masters (who are also the guides) know the treacherous terrain well and they understand how to stay out of the mirages and quicksand. The sands here are silky smooth.

Various cultural programs are organised here against the backdrop of the setting sun. Rajasthani folk music and dance is best enjoyed in dunes, along with a traditional Rajasthani meal. The Desert Festival in the month of February is the best time to experience the Sam Sand Dunes.

Khurri village is located about 40 km from Jaisalmer or five kilometres away from Sam sand dunes. It is a typical desert village with circular huts made of a mixture of clay and cow dung. These huts are extremely practical as they can withstand temperatures up to 50 degrees centigrade and desert winds of over 130 km per hour. The huts are adorned with folk art on the walls and floors.

Camel rides, music and dance and dinner packages are easily available here. There are various safari camps offering various levels of accommodation to tourists. While the days are hot, at night the temperature drops quickly and it becomes quite chilly.

The entire experience at Sam sand dunes and Khurri village are straight out of Arabian Nights.
