The association of Jaipur with elephants goes long back when the Royals stepped out in style for official ceremonies and other functions, seated on beautifully dressed and bejewelled elephants. The Elephant festival held annually in Jaipur celebrates this royal past of the city. Bedecked in gold or silver 'Howda' and colourful, embroidered caparisons, the graceful elephants are truly an imposing sight. During the festival, the elephants are taken out in a procession, they run races, play the royal game of polo, and participate in Holi, the spring festival of colours. It is fun and celebration time for both people and elephants! Even camels and horses participate and there are folk dancers adding to the merry-making. Chaugan, the old stadium at Jaipur, comes alive each year with this spectacle. The elephants even greet the visitors and them; walk past the ramp in 'catwalk' before a jury of experts and tourists who select the 'Best Decorated Elephant' through a popular vote. A shield is presented to the winner!
