Forts And Palaces Of Rajasthan Are Major Tourist Attractions. Reflecting The Different Architectural Styles Of Various Royal Families Of Rajasthan, A Large Number Of The Palaces Are Now Heritage Hotels.

Jaislamer Fort, Jaisalmer

Rajasthan’s forts and palaces are its pride and also the biggest tourism attraction and revenue earner. As every royal family had a flagship Fort or a Palace, the architecture varies from town to town. Some of these forts and palaces have become famous the world over. Built on hilltops, built in the middle of desert, and even built in the middle of lakes, these forts and palaces have a rich piece of Rajasthan’s history attached to them. From the rugged and rough to poetry in marble and sandstone, these architectural marvels never fail to spring surprises and charm everybody.


Rajasthan Forts

Golden Fort or Sonar Killa, Jaisalmer
Situated in Jaisalmer on the Trikuta Hill, it is made of yellow sandstone, that’s why it is also called the Golden Fort. It was built by the Bhatti chief Jaisal.

Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur
Rao Jodha built this fort in 1459 after moving his capital from Mandore to Jodhpur. Mehrangarh fort is about 400-ft above the city and has 68-ft wide and 117-ft high walls that dominate the surrounding area.

Jaigarh Fort, Jaipur
Jaigarh Fort is called the fort of victory. It is a rugged structure built in 1726 by Sawai Jai Singh. It was the royal treasury for some time. It is perched on a cliff and surrounded by massive battlements with walkways inside that offer stunning views.

A large fort, it occupies 280-hectares on top of a 180-metre-high hill that rises abruptly from the surrounding plain. Designed to be invincible, this fort however has tragic history.

Among the best of Rajput architecture, this fort was built at the time of Akbar’s reign, by his trusted General, Raja Rai Singh. This fort is unconquered, even though it was attacked several times.
